The threat of bedbugs and the application of the DANGEROUS chemicals used to treat them stopped a pregnant US Postal worker from delivering mail to a Detroit inhabited by seniors.
The residents turned to the media to complain when they could not get mail delivery of their social security payments on the first of the month.
The postal worker indicated she stopped delivery last week when she saw exterminators in hazardous materials gear spraying the building for bedbugs.

I dont blame the Letter Carrier. I wouldn't want my pregnant wife anywhere near chemicals being sprayed or near people who require hazmat suits. Thats a recipe for disaster.
Hi Wallace,
The pregnant postal worker had every right not to enter as I'am sure work comp is on her side, but am disapointed the post office didn't offer another solution for the buildings tenants.
One day while they exterminators were there I can understand. However, the postal worker did not report the non-delivery to her supervisor and it took the MEDIA calling it to the USPS's attention to get the mail delivered after a WEEK!
Wallace,
Anything for a media circus. Besides, I thought most seniors had direct deposit. :)

Steve * I don't because SS won't believe I've married yet AGAIN!!! Many seniors want to go to the bank and talk to the tellers.
The Post Office... Because they are a paragon of efficiency and determination...
Wallace, I wouldn't want to enter the building if I were pregnant or NOT....they post office should have made other arrangements for the seniors to get their mail/checks.
Goodness. Couldn't the Post Office have done or made any other arrangements? The worker was right in not wanting to enter that building! Poor woman! Shw was only thinking of her baby's safety. But pregnant or not, those chemicals are dreadfully harmful to a person!
Thank you for the post. I would be scared to go to a building where there are bed bugs and harmful chemicals.
Wallace I think some missed the fact that the employee took it upon herself not to deliver the mail and failed to report it. Secondly I don't agree with those who suggest that the post office should have made alternate arrangements for the seniors to get their mail. It seems to me that the building managers or the seniors should have made arrangements.
The long and short of it is that the woman was wrong in not going to her supervisors and notifying them that she felt that entering the building posed a threat. The seniors were wrong in placing the burden of responsibility on the post office rather than the building management. This is just my personal feeling.
USPS has the responsibility for deliverying the mail and their "agent" failed in her duty...to deliver the MAIL; to notify her supervisor (bet she had a cel phone) AND to notify mgmt of her decision (bet she had a cel phone and mgmt's phone # is on the sign out front of the building).
Whats up with these bed bugs? I thought washing the sheets would kill them? I say bring back DDT!
I agree * DDT would solve the problem and not have it RETURN!!!
